UVM Robert E. and Holly D. Miller Building
About
THIS PROJECT
The UVM Robert E. and Holly D. Miller Building is a seven-story, 180,000 SF tower with 128 beds. There are over four inpatient floors, interstitial, mechanical and support space immediately west of the existing emergency department. The tower accommodates:
- Cardiothoracic, vascular and bariatric surgery patients
- Cardiology patients
- Oncology patients and related surgical services
- Orthopedic patients
The project also involved the expansion of the emergency department on the first level, an extension of the utility tunnel to the new building and 66,000 SF of renovation work. The central plant received a new 1,400-ton centrifugal chiller, 1,500-kilowatt generator, 600-BHP boiler with stack modifications and related MEP extensions and relocations. The project also includes footings and utility pathways to accommodate a vertical expansion of up to six floors. This project achieved over 500,000 manhours without a lost-time incident.

OFF-SITE CONSTRUCTION
We worked closely with UVM to utilize 25,000 SF of their local warehouse space for our off-site fabrication. We collectively mapped out the production floor and developed a sequence for building and palletizing our walls for shipment to the jobsite. Our prefabrication efforts yielded major project benefits such as schedule optimization, reduced deliveries to a congested project site and reduced manpower surges during the MEP rough-in phase.
We built the following items off site:
- Shower wall assemblies
- Bathroom sink wall assemblies
- Infection control handwashing sink wall assemblies
- Clinical service sink assemblies
- Medical zone valve box assemblies
