This project was a 150,000 SF, five-story addition to George Mason’s Fenwick Library. The expansion accommodates research material growth for the next 20 years and significantly increases space for students and faculty by 1,200 seats. The facility has a technology-rich environment with instructional and collaborative areas for teaching/learning activities and research, including 30 group study rooms. There is also a new research commons, which is a large, open study area that focuses on the needs of upper-level undergraduates, graduate students and faculty researchers.

The project also included utility relocations/rerouting, additional egress stair towers, fire rating upgrades/separation between existing buildings, and a 200,000 SF fire alarm and sprinkler retrofit of the existing buildings. This multi-phased project was in the middle of an active campus with dorms and classrooms on both sides of the site. The addition engulfed three sides of the existing library, which remained fully operational throughout construction.

This project is pursuing LEED® Silver certification.
