University of Delaware East Campus Utility Plant
About
THIS PROJECT
This project included the installation of various underground utilities, including 10-inch to 30-inch chilled water lines for a 25,000 SF central chilled water plant. The plant is designed to house 5,500 tons of chilled water capacity, along with the provisions for a future build-out of 5,500 tons of chilled water. Quality control efforts for the pipes included radiographic testing, and work also included the installation of a 35-kilovolt dedicated electrical feed and associated gear.
We coordinated with many different groups during this project to confirm the piping was installed correctly. Meetings were held with the professors in charge of laboratories near the site to make sure that the work was not going to affect the experiments they had underway. Soil testing was also scheduled daily to identify compaction issues and make sure the moisture content of the soil was just right.

In addition, the team led the coordination of the flushing of the chilled water pipes. The flushing required several large pumps, high pressure temporary piping systems, several chemicals in large quantities, modifications to the previously installed piping, the addition of valves and blow-offs. Because of team’s attention to detail and their dedication to quality, this job was completed on time and under budget.
This was the first building on the University of Delaware campus that was not built to Georgian Architecture style. The modern urban style was so successful that the University has replicated this style with most buildings since then.
