Blue Diamond Growers Project Century
About
THIS PROJECT
This facility used a design-build delivery for a 190,000 SF, state-of-the-art food processing facility utilizing an integrated project delivery structure. The project consists of:
- Ready-to-eat food processing areas
- Automated packaging, shipping and receiving
- Elevated interstitial space for MEP equipment
- 20-acres of new site development
- Public road improvements and signalization
The facility’s packaging and pelletizing system processes up to 120,000 pounds of almonds per hour, which accounts for roughly 50% of world’s almond production.
Lean tools and principles were implemented throughout the design and construction processes. Collaborative delivery included early subcontractor involvement in design-assist and design-build roles. Target value design was successfully implemented to make sure the project was designed to the aggressive budget goal, and Last Planner® commitment-based scheduling method was used, including pull-planning, weekly work planning and commitment tracking. An extensive VDC program provided 3D coordination of building and process equipment systems to facilitate an extensive prefabrication program.
The project achieved LEED® Silver certification and won the Food Plant of the Year from Food Engineering Magazine.
