THIS PROJECT
The School of Data Science (SDS) and National Security Collaboration Center (NSCC) is a 165,000 SF, six-story academic building on the University of Texas at San Antonio’s campus. It serves as a collaborative and innovative space for education, research and external engagement in information security and data science. Located in downtown San Antonio, the facility is one of the first in higher education to combine co-located space for students, government partners and private industry partners. The facility includes:
- Computational research laboratory
- Innovation factory
- Collaboration spaces
- Cloud computing and visualization technologies
- Special operations command center
- Learning center
- Multipurpose room
- Conference rooms
- Faculty and staff offices
- Open office workstations
- Instructional classrooms
Architectural elements of the building include brick, glass and metal panels on the exterior façade. Additional exterior amenities feature an urban porch, an entry plaza and direct access to San Pedro Creek via a pedestrian walkway.

Sustainability
ATTRIBUTES
With thoughtful attention to energy efficiency and sustainable site development, this project implemented strategic construction of indoor-outdoor connections, reconfigurable spaces for multipurpose use and stormwater management systems. Additional sustainability elements include:
- Solar panels on the roof
- Low-VOC paints and floor sealants
- Bioswale with biophilic Kebony wood deck and benches
- Third-party air testing of the facility
- Reduced light pollution
- Reduced amount of construction waste to 14.33 lbs. per SF
