UCONN Downtown Hartford Campus
About
THIS PROJECT
The University of Connecticut returns home with the Downtown Hartford Campus project, which is a 180,000 SF mixed-use building. The facility includes 161,000 SF of academic space and 19,000 SF of core and shell retail space. This building replaced the current campus and provides all academic services, including:
- 23 classrooms
- Staff and faculty offices
- Three computer labs
- Five science teaching labs
- Conference and meeting rooms
- Three-story grand atrium
- Large student lounge
- Collaboration spaces
- Student services offices
The existing portion of the project was previously the Hartford Times Building, which was built in 1920. The existing granite columns and other decorative façade elements originated as part of the New York Presbyterian church in New York City. This church was dismantled in 1920 and these key elements were floated up the Connecticut River and installed in as part of the Hartford Times Building. This front terrace of the building has been the backdrop for four presidential speeches by Truman, Johnson, Eisenhower and Kennedy.
