THIS PROJECT
The University of Florida Data Center is a single-story data center that serves as a significant cornerstone in the development of the East Campus. The primary purpose of this building is for consolidation of computing resources previously housed across campus, redundancy of enterprise system and expandability of operations.

The facility includes 10,000 SF of computing and 4,400 SF of standby administrative space, and the computing space is equally split between a Tier 3 data center and 5,000 SF of data center research space. The project is served by an on-site central utility plant providing 2.5 MW of generator capacity and N+1 redundancy of cooling and electrical services.
Approximately two years after completion of the data center, Whiting-Turner performed infrastructure upgrades to the facility to support the installation of a new supercomputer, HiPerGator 2.0, which was the third fastest University supercomputer in the country. This work included the addition of a chiller, computer room air conditioning units, main switchboard, UPS, power distribution units and busways. The new computer increased the IT load, which created the need for redundancy in the mechanical systems and required more power to support the server racks.
The data center is 100% redundant, so while installing our new switchgear we were able to power down existing switchgear without interrupting the operations of the data halls. In addition, the project only required one shutdown because we were able to coordinate all of the tie-ins at once.
This project achieved LEED® certification.
