Fort Worth Zoo African Savanna

About

THIS PROJECT

The African Savanna is four-acre expansion of the Fort Worth Zoo. The expansion includes habitats for a wide range of African animals, including:

  • Black rhinos
  • Reticulated giraffe
  • Meerkats
  • Hippos
  • Zebras
  • Lesser kudu
  • Springbok
  • Lesser flamingos
  • Multiple species of African birds

The hippopotamus exhibit anchors the African Savanna and is sustained by two extensive life support systems. It features a flowing river, which offers 80 feet of underwater viewing. There are barns, night houses and off-exhibit yards for each animal species. Animals are surrounded by artificial, themed rockwork in exhibits and animal barriers in off-exhibit areas.

There are also new pedestrian areas with shaded viewing structures, overlooks, boardwalks and bridges, and themed amenities, such as restaurants and souvenir shops. The boardwalk provides elevated views of the Savanna and serves as a platform for giraffe feeding. An area with a full-service kitchen, event tent and large deck is also available to for private events for up to 1,000 people and overlooks the main exhibit space.
