Korean War Veterans Memorial Wall of Remembrance
About
THIS PROJECT
In addition to refurbishing the memorial, the project included the construction of the Wall of Remembrance. The memorial, originally constructed in 1995, is located to the southeast of the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Nearly three decades later, it was renovated to incorporate one hundred new black granite panels, each weighing between six and eight tons. These panels include the names of over 36,500 Americans service members and 7,200 members of the Korean Augmentation to the United States Army.
One of the most significant aspects of this refurbishment included the preservation of the existing stainless-steel sculptures at the Field of Service. All 19 statues were subject to a detailed inspection and categorized into different groups based on the current condition. A customized cleaning plan was developed to restore the statues to their original state, including the reapplication of ink with a protective coating. Other components of the renovation included:
- Repairing the pavement around the memorial.
- Replacing the engraved names of participating countries and casualty figures with stainless steel letters.
- Refinishing the stainless-steel statues.
- Replacing the pool operating systems such as controls, filters and pumps.
- Replacing the linden trees and juniper bushes.
- Upgrading the lighting components to high-efficiency LED lamps.
- Installing a new irrigation system that will extend the life of the linden trees.
