NIST Precision Measurement Laboratory

About

THIS PROJECT

The NIST Precision Measurement Laboratory is a 283,000 SF research facility including 62,000 SF of research laboratory space, 20,000 SF of Class 100 cleanroom space and 45,000 SF of office space. The wet laboratory space is comprised of single to quadruple module spaces which contain casework, overhead service carriers, fume hoods and biosafety cabinets. Each laboratory is designed with removable partitions to allow for the utmost flexibility. The 20,000 SF cleanroom is a bay and chase arrangement and is a fully ducted, Class 100 HEPA filtered environment. These labs house world-class research experiments including the world’s most precise atomic clock and an advanced helium recovery system.

The project also included the expansion of an operating central utility plant. This included the addition of two 1,500-ton chillers and associated cooling towers, 3200A megavolt substations and optimization of the entire central utility plant chiller operations. BIM was used extensively on this project for clash detection of MEP systems, shop fabrication and spooling, total station layout and virtual mock-ups to review interstitial and penthouse areas.

This project achieved LEED® Gold certification.
