Ocado Automation Fulfillment Center
About
THIS PROJECT
This design-build project constructed a 318,000 SF, automated fulfillment center for The Kroger Company to deliver groceries directly to consumers. The scope of work included, partial demolition of 350,000 SF of warehouse space, construction of the fulfillment center and renovation of a 373,000 SF warehouse. The facility features:
- 34,000 SF of office space
- Freezer space
- Food prep/packing area
- Underground fuel tank
- Fuel pumps
- Fuel canopy
- Vehicle maintenance shop
- Automated vehicle wash system
The automated facility is equipped with robots that move along the top of a grid system. Robots select grocery filled crates that are later sorted and assembled into customer orders. The advanced digital and robotic equipment inside the facility provides automatic fulfillment for home delivery to customers throughout several states in the Mid-Atlantic region.
The project team collaborated with an engineering firm to develop the project’s design. Off-site construction benefited the project as the refrigeration packaged units were prefabricated and then brought to the project location for final installation. The Whiting-Turner team utilized VDC on the project to coordinate the MEP trades for the structural steel mezzanines and the office areas.
